Quanta Computer Inc., laptop computer maker, & and OoVoo, a maker of video chat software, are announcing plans Monday to take high-definition videoconferencing to the living room with a gadget that plugs into the HDTV and connects it to the Internet.

Users of the Quanta Video Messenger will be able to hold chats from the comfort of their living rooms with others with the device as well as anyone who is running OoVoo's software on a PC.

Sony Corp. unveiled Sunday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) a new proprietary Near Field wireless technology called TransferJet, whose underlying technology is based on a variation of UWB.

TransferJet allows high-speed wireless data transfer from a camcorder, for example, to a flat panel HDTV, simply by placing the camcorder on top of a wireless filed unit.
